PUNTA SECCA
Punta Secca is administratively part of the town of Santa Croce di Camerina, just five kilometers inland. The provincial capital of Ragusa is only about 30 kilometers away. It’s small fishermen village with a lighthouse, a small port and an old watchtower, the Torre Scalambri, Punta Secca offers lovely landscapes and clear seas. There is a tower from the 1500s, a remnant of the old coastal defense system that helped warn of possible pirate raids and Saracen attacks on the shores. Unfortunately, the historic Torre Scalambri has been covered by a drab cement but easy to see its old features and the part it played in protecting the village. The Punta Secca lighthouse was built in 1853 and is 35m high. The town has gained renown in the RAI television for TV series Inspector Montalbano, adapted from Andrea Camilleri’s “Inspector Montalbano” books. Many scenes with Montalbano’s fictional home are set in a house standing right to the beach and called Marinella. There are seafront restaurants and miles of beaches to walk along.
PUNTA BRACCETTO
The territory has been inhabited since ancient times. Evidence dating from the second half of the second millennium BC have been discovered. This settlement was very important at the beginning of the naval in Greek-Roman era since its cliffs were used as a landing place for repairing boats from storms. The two pools of fresh water at the base of the cliff called the Arm of Colombara served to supply the all-important vital liquid. Between 1595 and 1607, on the arm of Colombara Vigliena was built the coastal tower defense from pirate attacks from North Africa in visual contact with the tower of Peter’s (located in the neighboring town of Tower Mezzo) and the tower Scalambri of Punta Secca. Punta Braccetto has three beautiful beaches: the beach Vigliena, the beach of Eurydice and the wide beach of the natural reserve. The Vigliena beach, about 500 meters long, is nestled between two rocky ridges that protect it from the currents. Continuing west, after the arm of Colombara, it is the beach of Eurydice, so called because, according to legend, the burial will take place in the mythological wife of Orpheus. This beach of fine sand stretches alternated with stretches of rocky outcrops. The coast continues with the cliffs of Canalotti, about one kilometer long and which has walls overlooking the sea. The beginning of the reef is marked by a natural pool with waters that reach 7.6 meters deep, a destination for many divers, called Cala dell’àmmira (dialect name of amber). In this beach nesting increasingly some specimens of the turtle caretta-caretta
