SYRACUSE:
Visiting Syracuse is like taking a journey back in time. The city lies on the eastern coast of Sicily situated in one of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful bays. Founded in 734 BC  by Corinthian colons the first settlements were on the island of Ortigia which preserve ruins of the first Temple dedicated to Apollo. The colony- grew rapidly in prosperity and military strength and soon became a magnetic center of power for the whole Mediterranean area. After various vicissitudes, the city was taken during the Second Punic Wars by the Romans in 212 BC. During the siege Archimedes used the famous burning glasses. When the power of Rome declined, Syracuse suffered repeated attacks by Franks, Vandals and Goths, then united with the Byzantine Empire it housed the court of Constants II. In medieval times, the arrival of Arabs and Normans brought changes to the town’s layout enriched it economically and culturally. The 1693 earthquake was terrible for the whole province and led to reconstruction on a vast scale, making Syracuse into an important capital of the Baroque style in Europe. This city not only has an extremely rich cultural past, it is set in breathtaking beautiful natural surroundings: the peaceful bay of Porto Grande with the Maddalena Peninsula, and in the background the magic Monti Iblei with Etna. The Syracuse of today is a city of art and great archaeological interest. In the charming and picturesque Island of Ortygia you’re surrounded by clean white buildings, Medieval and Baroque architecture with the imposing presence of ancient vestiges and ruins. Many famous contributors to culture and learning have been born in Syracuse: Archimedes one of the greatest scientists of the ancient world, Salvatore Quasimodo poet, and Elio Vittorini writer and journalist. An important cultural event in Syracuse is the performance of the classical Greek tragedies represented in the Greek Theater every year from May to July.

THE COASTLINE
The coastal strip of Syracuse has some of the most beautiful beaches that can be found on the island, with long white sandy shorelines surrounded by incredible natural scenery of Sicily. From Brucoli to Isola delle Correnti there are 100 kilometers of coastline mixed sandy with some sections rustic and wild, while others are animated and carefree, but always exciting. Calamosche, Fontane Bianche, Vendicari and Marine Reserve Plemmirio are just some of the places which can be admired among the warm rays of the sun that makes the mirror shimmer of crystal clear water that bathes the entire coast.
